Autism and ELLs (Newcomers)

by Kirsten on Dec 14 2009 7:20 PM

Hello...I have a new student who has special needs and has been diagnosed with autism. He has been placed in an alternative school setting which despite initial thoughts is wonderful. The staff is kind, patient and quite knowledgeable. I am working with the teachers more than the students as a consultant. Does anyone have experience with ELLs with social/language development issues? Any particular strategies that "pop out" as applicable? THANKS!

It was discovered recently that one percent of autistic children have either a loss or duplication in a region of chromosome that encompasses the gene for ERK1. Students afflicted with autism can benefit from people who think creatively and originally. Good luck in your endeavors1

In the regular ed program, I work with the speech and language specialist for a student with autism. The emphasis on oral production and communication activities in partners and groups in the ELD class has been very beneficial to the student.
Our school district has SPED speech and language specialists who work with the students in our Lifeskills programs...
